The name Opicina has Celtic origins and should have the meaning of rock. The first quotation goes back to documents of the year 1308, where the name Optchena is reported.
Till the beginning of this century, Opicina has been prevalently a rural village and only later it became a commercial and handcraft centre.
In the historical centre there are some typical Karstic buildings: houses, with courtyard and well, stable and decorated portals. On portals, the divine invoke IHS is usually ingraved together with a cross, a heart and palms. The church situated in the centre of the town is dedicated to San Bartolomeo.
Opicina is an important road junction to Ljubljana (Slovenia) and to Rjieka (Croatia).
In the town of Trebiciano there are lots of houses which still maintain the typical characteristics of Karstic buildings. In the central square a church dedicated to Sant'Andrea is set, but in 1694 another, smaller church was situated in the same place. In the northern part of the village, near the border with Slovenia, we find the abyss of Trebiciano very interesting for its dimension and the richness of Karstic phenomena.

Another important scientific complex is set close to Basovizza. In this complex the light generator of synchrotron "Elettra" is situated (1994). The aim of the project is to build a source of particular electro-magnetic waves which would allow futuristic researches in the fields of physics, chemistry, sciences of materials, medicine and industrial applications.
